This past week there was an article in the LA Times claiming that the Catholic Church shouldn’t have taken PPP loans because they are so rich.

I wrote this letter to the editor that was published on February 11th.
Full disclosure our Church St. Mary’s in Whittier received a PPP loan for $125,000.00. Since our church doors have closed we have expanded our food bank, (before we served 30 a month we know serve on average 400 a week); we have buried 275 people; we visit PIH Whittier 3 times a week and answer emergency calls; we continue to teach children in our grade school; celebrate the sacraments and have daily and weekly services. We have been confused by guidelines from the government but all of our services are held outside because we believe it is safer. We have also asked our elderly and people with compromised health to stay home and participate through live streaming. Because we have followed government guidelines our weekly attendance is 25% what is was pre-covid and our offering 75%.
With the PPP loan we were able to pay our employee’s salaries, when the loan ran out we had to lay-off 5 staff members. There are over 17,000 Catholic Churches in the United States the majority are probably in worse shape than St. Mary’s. It’s an old myth that the Catholic Church has billions of dollars lying around gathering dust and the church is an easy target. I am grateful that we qualified for a PPP loan; I believe we used that money well. If we qualify for another loan I will apply and more hungry will be feed, sick people will be comforted, the dead will be buried and salaries will be paid.

More importantly I am very proud of who we are as a Catholic Church, world wide and here in Whittier, CA. In normal times we wouldn’t ask for help in continuing to do what it is that we do, but as we all know these are not ordinary times. I am grateful for the help that we have received from the US government, but more importantly I am grateful to all of you. It is a blessing to serve as your pastor.

Debido a que hemos seguido las reglas del gobierno, nuestra asistencia semanal es del 25% de lo que era pre-covid y nuestra oferta del 75%. Con el préstamo PPP pudimos pagar los sueldos de nuestros empleados, cuando se acabó el préstamo tuvimos que despedir a 5 empleados.
Hay más de 17.000 iglesias católicas en los Estados Unidos, la mayoría probablemente en peor forma que la de Santa María. Es un viejo mito que la Iglesia Católica tiene miles de millones de dólares acumulando polvo y la iglesia es un blanco fácil. Estoy agradecido de que calificamos para un préstamo PPP; Creo que usamos bien ese dinero. Si calificamos para otro préstamo, solicitaré y se alimentará a más hambrientos, se consolará a los enfermos, se enterrará a los muertos y se pagarán los salarios. Más importante aún, estoy muy orgulloso de quiénes somos como Iglesia Católica, en todo el mundo y aquí en Whittier, CA. En tiempos normales, no pediríamos ayuda para seguir haciendo lo que hacemos, pero como todos sabemos, estos no son tiempos normales.
